Flax Fiber Market Size in Africa

After three years of growth, the African flax fiber market decreased by -X% to $X in 2020. The total consumption indicated a buoyant increase from 2007 to 2020: its value increased at an average annual rate of +X% over the last thirteen-year period. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. from 2019 to 2020, production growth failed to regain the momentum.

The country with the largest volume of flax fiber production was Egypt (X tonnes), accounting for X% of total volume.

From 2007 to 2020, the average annual growth rate of volume in Egypt was relatively modest.

The average flax fiber yield soared to X tonnes per ha in 2020, picking up by X% against 2019. The yield indicated mild growth from 2007 to 2020: its figure increased at an average annual rate of +X% over the last thirteen years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2020 figures, flax fiber yield decreased by -X% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of X% y-o-y. As a result, the yield attained the peak level of X tonnes per ha. from 2019 to 2020, the growth of the flax fiber yield remained at a lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2020, the harvested area of flax fiber in Africa was estimated at X ha, stabilizing at the year before. In general, the harvested area, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2009 when the harvested area increased by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to flax fiber production attained the maximum at X ha in 2011; however, from 2012 to 2020, the harvested area remained at a lower figure.

In 2020, exports of flax fiber in Africa surged to X tonnes, with an increase of X% against 2019 figures. In general, exports posted a pronounced expansion. The volume of export peaked at X tonnes in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2020, exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, flax fiber exports skyrocketed to $X in 2020. Overall, exports showed a strong increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when exports increased by X% year-to-year. As a result, exports attained the peak of $X. from 2019 to 2020, the growth exports remained at a lower figure.

The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2010 when imports increased by X% year-to-year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tonnes in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2020, imports failed to regain the momentum.

In value terms, flax fiber imports expanded to $X in 2020. Over the period under review, imports enjoyed a strong expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2008 with an increase of X% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2020 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

Tunisia represented the main importing country with an import of about X tonnes, which accounted for X% of total imports. South Africa (X tonnes) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a X% share, followed by Egypt (X%).

From 2007 to 2020, average annual rates of growth with regard to flax fiber imports into Tunisia stood at +X%. At the same time, South Africa (+X%) and Egypt (+X%) displayed positive paces of growth.
