In 2022, the average wrapping papers import price amounted to $1,803 per ton, jumping by 18% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.4%. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was China ($4,046 per ton), while the price for South Korea ($992 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United States (+9.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

In August 2023, the average wrapping papers export price amounted to $2,664 per ton, shrinking by -18.3% against the previous month. In general, the export price faced a deep contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in June 2023 an increase of 280% month-to-month. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $11,825 per ton in August 2022; however, from September 2022 to August 2023, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by the country of destination: the country with the highest price was Samoa ($3,013 per ton), while the average price for exports to New Caledonia ($1,138 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From August 2022 to August 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to New Caledonia (+1.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Wrapping Papers Imports in New Zealand
In 2022, approx. 13K tons of wrapping paper, packaging paper and paperboard were imported into New Zealand; which is down by -32.8% against the year before. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a deep reduction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 18%.
