The average waferboard import price stood at $461 per cubic meter in 2022, rising by 17% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.5%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 26%. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the peak figure in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the United States ($828 per cubic meter), while the price for Brazil ($345 per cubic meter) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Brazil (+12.1%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average waferboard export price stood at $436 per cubic meter in 2022, growing by 323% against the previous year. Overall, the export price showed buoyant growth. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the peak figure at $496 per cubic meter in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the Dominican Republic ($760 per cubic meter), while the average price for exports to Honduras ($71 per cubic meter) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Nicaragua (+0.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.
Waferboard Imports in Costa Rica
In 2022, after three years of growth, there was decline in supplies from abroad of waferboards, when their volume decreased by -2.6% to 36K cubic meters. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +7.1% from 2019 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 24%. As a result, imports attained the peak of 37K cubic meters, and then contracted slightly in the following year.
In value terms, waferboard imports rose sharply to $16M in 2022. Overall, total imports indicated a buoyant expansion from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +19.3% over the last three years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +78.7% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 57%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

Waferboard Exports in Costa Rica
After three years of growth, shipments abroad of waferboards decreased by -80.4% to 125 cubic meters in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a strong expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 388% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of 639 cubic meters, and then declined notably in the following year.
In value terms, waferboard exports shrank rapidly to $54K in 2022. Overall, exports, however, recorded significant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when exports increased by 106%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $66K in 2021, and then reduced dramatically in the following year.
