Virgin Olive Oil Price in Italy (CIF) - 2021
In November 2021, the average virgin olive oil import price amounted to $3,739 per ton, dropping by -3.3% against the previous month. Over the last twelve months, it increased at an average monthly rate of +1.8%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in May 2021 when the average import price increased by 7.3% against the previous month. The import price peaked at $3,865 per ton in October 2021, and then dropped slightly in the following month.
Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major supplying countries. In November 2021, the countries with the highest prices were Portugal ($3,867 per ton) and Spain ($3,743 per ton), while the price for Tunisia ($3,136 per ton) and Greece ($3,730 per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From November 2020 to November 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Tunisia (+2.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
Virgin Olive Oil Price in Italy (FOB) - 2021
In November 2021, the average virgin olive oil export price amounted to $5,436 per ton, standing approximately at the previous month. In general, the export price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in May 2021 an increase of 3.3% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $5,491 per ton in September 2021; however, from October 2021 to November 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In November 2021, the country with the highest price was Switzerland ($7,768 per ton), while the average price for exports to Spain ($1,965 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From November 2020 to November 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Canada (+2.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Virgin Olive Oil Imports in Italy
In 2022, the amount of virgin olive oil imported into Italy stood at 541K tons, surging by 6.1% compared with 2021. In general, imports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 6.7% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of 572K tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, virgin olive oil imports declined to $1.6B in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +3.0% over the period from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 24% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $1.8B, and then shrank in the following year.

From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +4.8% from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations in certain years.
