View PricingThe Process of Making Biodiesel
Biodiesel is a renewable and eco-friendly substitute for diesel fuel. The process of making biodiesel involves chemically reacting vegetable oil or animal fats with an alcohol to produce an ester, which is a specific type of molecule. The following steps outline the general process of producing biodiesel:
- Feedstock Preparation: Vegetable oil or animal fats are collected and filtered to remove impurities such as water, food particles, and gums. In some cases, the oil may need to be treated with acid or base to neutralize any free fatty acids present.
- Reaction: The filtered oil is heated and mixed with an alcohol, usually methanol or ethanol, and a strong alkaline catalyst such as sodium hydroxide or potassium hydroxide. This process is called transesterification and results in the separation of glycerol and the creation of a new substance called fatty acid methyl ester (FAME) or ethyl esters (FAEE).
- Separation and Washing: The glycerol and FAME are then separated using gravity or centrifugation. The FAME is washed to remove any residual alcohol and catalyst from the reaction. The remaining glycerol is often sold to other industries for use in products such as soaps and cosmetics.
- Drying: The FAME is dried using a dehydrating agent such as magnesium sulfate or sodium sulfate. This ensures that any remaining water is removed from the biodiesel to prevent corrosion in the fuel system.
The resulting biodiesel can be used alone or blended with petroleum diesel to produce a biodiesel/petroleum diesel blend. Biodiesel production can be done on a small scale, such as in a homebrew setup, or a large scale, such as in a commercial biodiesel refinery.
Overall, the biodiesel production process is relatively simple and straightforward. However, it requires careful attention to detail and safety considerations to ensure that the final product is of high quality and suitable for use in diesel engines. It is also important to ensure that the feedstock used to produce biodiesel is sustainable and does not contribute to deforestation or other negative environmental impacts.

This year, Belgium is overtaking Germany to emerge as the second-largest biodiesel exporter in the world. From January to July 2021, Belgium supplied biodiesel worth $2.1B abroad, while Germany’s exports were estimated at $1.8B. The Netherlands keeps the leading position with a biodiesel export value of $4.2B. In 2020, Germany ($2.3B) followed the Netherlands ($4.6B) in global export ranking, while Belgium ($1.5B) took third place. The average biodiesel export price grew by +11% y-o-y to $979 per ton in 2020.
Neither the pandemic nor the low oil prices succeeded in slowing the growth of the global biodiesel market. As economies worldwide start to recover from the Covid crisis, and environmental concerns increase, the demand is set to remain robust in 2021.
