Sweet Potato Price in Canada (CIF) - 2023

The average sweet potato import price stood at $787 per ton in June 2023, rising by 1.5% against the previous month. Overall, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in August 2022 when the average import price increased by 25% against the previous month. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the peak figure at $827 per ton in April 2023; however, from May 2023 to June 2023, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was China ($1,443 per ton), while the price for the United States ($732 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From June 2022 to June 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Honduras (+0.7%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

Sweet Potato Price in Canada (FOB) - 2023

In June 2023, the average sweet potato export price amounted to $601 per ton, increasing by 8% against the previous month. In general, the export price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, the export price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of destination: the country with the highest price was the United States ($1,306 per ton), while the average price for exports to Belgium ($518 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From June 2022 to June 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Belgium (-0.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Sweet Potato Imports in Canada

In 2022, the amount of sweet potatoes imported into Canada totaled 82K tons, remaining constant against the previous year. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.1% over the period from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 11%. Imports peaked in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in years to come.

In value terms, sweet potato imports reduced slightly to $61M in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +2.3% over the period from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when imports increased by 14% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $65M. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
