Sulphur Price in China (CIF) - 2023

In June 2023, the average sulphur import price amounted to $117 per ton, which is down by -14.6% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the import price faced a deep contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in November 2022 an increase of 32% against the previous month. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the maximum at $471 per ton in June 2022; however, from July 2022 to June 2023, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was Kuwait ($175 per ton), while the price for Japan ($77.0 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From June 2022 to June 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Kuwait (-7.9%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.

Sulphur Price in China (FOB) - 2023

In June 2023, the average sulphur export price amounted to $222 per ton, falling by -13.3% against the previous month. In general, the export price saw a noticeable curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in July 2022 an increase of 56% m-o-m. The export price peaked at $633 per ton in August 2022; however, from September 2022 to June 2023, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of destination: the country with the highest price was Vietnam ($395 per ton), while the average price for exports to Myanmar ($212 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From June 2022 to June 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Tanzania (0.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

Sulphur Imports in China

Sulphur imports into China declined markedly to 7.6M tons in 2022, dropping by -64.5% on the year before. Overall, imports showed a deep slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 152% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of 22M tons, and then contracted remarkably in the following year.

In value terms, sulphur imports skyrocketed to $2.3B in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, enjoyed a significant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 173% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in years to come.

Chinese sulphur purchases fell from $1.3B in 2019 to $0.6B in 2020. The United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia and Iran constitute the largest suppliers to China, with a 49%-share of total import value.
