Sugar Price in Spain (CIF) - 2023
In July 2023, the average sugar import price amounted to $773 per ton, picking up by 10% against the previous month. Overall, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in March 2023 an increase of 13% against the previous month. The import price peaked at $823 per ton in May 2023; however, from June 2023 to July 2023, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($1,108 per ton), while the price for Brazil ($583 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From July 2022 to July 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by France (+6.5%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
Sugar Price in Spain (FOB) - 2022
The average sugar export price stood at $969 per ton in 2022, shrinking by -10.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price showed a pronounced slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the average export price increased by 20%. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the maximum at $1,605 per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($2,461 per ton), while the average price for exports to Portugal ($940 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Italy (+1.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.
Sugar Imports in Spain
In 2022, approx. 605K tons of sugar were imported into Spain; growing by 53% against 2021. Overall, imports enjoyed a prominent increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 86%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.
In value terms, sugar imports surged to $333M in 2022. In general, imports saw significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 124% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in years to come.

Sugar Exports in Spain
In 2022, the amount of sugar exported from Spain expanded rapidly to 8.1K tons, surging by 10% on the year before. In general, exports saw a relatively flat trend pattern.
In value terms, sugar exports shrank modestly to $7.8M in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a perceptible curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 11% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $10M.
