Sugar Crop Price in New Zealand (CIF) - 2022

The average sugar crop import price stood at $824 per ton in 2022, picking up by 11% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, recorded a deep contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when the average import price increased by 13%. The import price peaked at $1,907 per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

As there is only one major supplying country, the average price level is determined by prices for the UK.

From 2012 to 2022, the rate of growth in terms of prices for the UK amounted to +1.8% per year.

Sugar Crop Price in New Zealand (FOB) - 2022

In 2022, the average sugar crop export price amounted to $48,142 per ton, which is down by -14.6% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, recorded a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the average export price increased by 26,683%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $56,344 per ton, and then dropped in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Taiwan (Chinese) ($64,428 per ton), while the average price for exports to Australia amounted to $3,910 per ton.

From 2013 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Taiwan (Chinese) (-0.3%).

Sugar Crop Imports in New Zealand

In 2022, purchases abroad of sugar crops increased by 39% to 1.7K tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +8.1% over the period from 2019 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, sugar crop imports surged to $1.4M in 2022. Overall, total imports indicated a prominent expansion from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +18.5% over the last three-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +66.5% against 2019 indices. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In 2022, shipments abroad of sugar crops decreased by -40.7% to 1.9 tons, falling for the second consecutive year after two years of growth. As a result, the exports reached the peak of 60 tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, sugar crop exports dropped notably to $91K in 2022. In general, exports, however, saw a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 16,124% against the previous year.
