Sugar Crop Price in Costa Rica (FOB) - 2022

In 2022, the average sugar crop export price amounted to $842 per ton, surging by 18% against the previous year. Overall, export price indicated a prominent increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +8.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, sugar crop export price increased by +32.8% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the average export price increased by 19%. The export price peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($1,066 per ton), while the average price for exports to Canada ($662 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Canada (+9.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Sugar Crop Price in Costa Rica (CIF) - 2022

In 2022, the average sugar crop import price amounted to $2,399 per ton, growing by 68% against the previous year. Overall, the import price recorded a prominent increase. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Hungary ($3,170 per ton), while the price for Spain amounted to $1,540 per ton.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Spain (+6.1%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.

Sugar Crop Exports in Costa Rica

In 2022, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas shipments of sugar crops, when their volume decreased by -19.2% to 1.9K tons. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate significant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 108%.

In value terms, sugar crop exports fell modestly to $1.6M in 2022. In general, exports, however, enjoyed a significant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 94% against the previous year.

Sugar Crop Imports in Costa Rica

For the fourth year in a row, Costa Rica recorded growth in supplies from abroad of sugar crops, which increased by 15% to 144 tons in 2022. In general, total imports indicated a buoyant expansion from 2019 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +17.1% over the last three-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +60.6% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 39% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in the near future.

In value terms, sugar crop imports soared to $344K in 2022. Overall, imports saw a significant expansion. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
