Styrene Price in Malaysia (CIF) - 2021
In December 2021, the average styrene import price amounted to $1,143 per ton, declining by -10% against the previous month. Overall, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in March 2021 when the average import price increased by 24% month-to-month. The import price peaked at $1,365 per ton in June 2021; however, from July 2021 to December 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major supplying countries. In December 2021, the country with the highest price was Saudi Arabia ($1,175 per ton), while the price for Singapore totaled $1,092 per ton.
From December 2020 to December 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Saudi Arabia (+0.8%).
Styrene Price in Malaysia (FOB) - 2021
The average styrene export price stood at $1,056 per ton in December 2021, which is down by -14.5% against the previous month. Overall, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in March 2021 when the average export price increased by 23% against the previous month. The export price peaked at $1,485 per ton in June 2021; however, from July 2021 to December 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Average prices varied somewhat for the major external markets. In December 2021, the country with the highest price was Singapore ($1,356 per ton), while the average price for exports to India stood at $1,051 per ton.
From December 2020 to December 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Thailand (+2.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.
Styrene Imports in Malaysia
In 2022, approx. 162K tons of styrene were imported into Malaysia; dropping by -5.7% on the previous year. In general, imports saw a perceptible shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 11% against the previous year.
In value terms, styrene imports reduced sharply to $166M in 2022. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a pronounced shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 72%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $210M, and then reduced sharply in the following year.
