Spirits and Liqueurs Price in Portugal (CIF) - 2022

In 2022, the average spirits and liqueurs import price amounted to $3.8 per litre, rising by 5.2% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, showed a mild shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the average import price increased by 14%. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the maximum at $4.9 per litre in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($6.7 per litre), while the price for Spain ($3 per litre) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Italy (+5.2%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

Spirits and Liqueurs Price in Portugal (FOB) - 2023

In July 2023, the average spirits and liqueurs export price amounted to $4.5 per litre, shrinking by -23% against the previous month. In general, the export price saw a pronounced slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in June 2023 when the average export price increased by 70% m-o-m. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $7.0 per litre in July 2022; however, from August 2022 to July 2023, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of destination: the country with the highest price was the United States ($9.3 per litre), while the average price for exports to Ireland ($1.6 per litre) was amongst the lowest.

From July 2022 to July 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the United States (+5.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Spirits and Liqueurs Imports in Portugal

In 2022, spirits and liqueurs imports into Portugal surged to 47M litres, rising by 31% on the previous year's figure. Overall, total imports indicated a prominent expansion from 2019 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +14.8% over the last three years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +61.2% against 2020 indices. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, spirits and liqueurs imports soared to $177M in 2022. Over the period under review, total imports indicated resilient growth from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.6% over the last three years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +66.0% against 2020 indices. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Spirits and Liqueurs Exports in Portugal

In 2022, shipments abroad of spirits, liqueurs and other spirituous beverages decreased by -7.1% to 16M litres for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. Overall, total exports indicated resilient growth from 2019 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +14.7% over the last three-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +50.9% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 56%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of 17M litres, and then fell in the following year.

In value terms, spirits and liqueurs exports rose markedly to $70M in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +10.1% over the period from 2019 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 18% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.
