Spices; Saffron Price in Iran (FOB) - 2022

The average spices; saffron export price stood at $625,860 per ton in 2022, rising by 5.2% against the previous year. In general, export price indicated moderate growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, spices; saffron export price increased by +5.5% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 an increase of 16% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $998,836 per ton. From 2020 to 2022, the average export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was France ($882,280 per ton), while the average price for exports to Saudi Arabia ($180,326 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Spain (+5.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average spices; saffron import price stood at $132,982 per ton in 2022, declining by -35.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price saw a abrupt decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the average import price increased by 36%. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the maximum at $423,450 per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($1,216,444 per ton), while the price for Oman ($19,834 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United Arab Emirates (+9.6%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, approx. 275 tons of spices; saffra were exported from Iran; picking up by 6.1% compared with the previous year's figure. Overall, exports, however, recorded a noticeable shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when exports increased by 7.8%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of 321 tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, spices; saffron exports stood at $172M in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a abrupt curtailment.
