Soap and Detergent Price in South Africa (FOB) - 2022
In 2022, the average soap and detergent export price amounted to $1,375 per ton, picking up by 8.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the average export price increased by 15%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $1,488 per ton. From 2014 to 2022, the average export prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Democratic Republic of the Congo ($1,713 per ton), while the average price for exports to Mozambique ($923 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Zimbabwe (+6.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Soap and Detergent Price in South Africa (CIF) - 2022
In 2022, the average soap and detergent import price amounted to $2,021 per ton, growing by 1.7% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 14%. The import price peaked at $2,044 per ton in 2012; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was France ($4,123 per ton), while the price for Portugal ($410 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Malaysia (+3.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
Soap and Detergent Exports in South Africa
In 2022, shipments abroad of soap and detergents decreased by -8.1% to 430K tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.1% from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 14%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of 468K tons, and then contracted in the following year.
In value terms, soap and detergent exports amounted to $592M in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +7.8% from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 23% against the previous year. The exports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.
