Which Country Exports the Most Soap in the World?

In 2016, approx. 5.5M tonnes of soap were exported worldwide; surging by 5% against the previous year figure. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.7% from 2007 to 2016; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013, when export increased by 9% year-to-year. Global soap export peaked in 2016, and are likely to continue its growth in the near future.

In value terms, soap exports totaled $9.6B in 2016. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +4.3% from 2007 to 2016; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations in certain years. Global soap export peaked of $10B in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2016, it stood at a somewhat lower level.

Soap Exports By Country

In 2016, Indonesia (685K tonnes), Malaysia (538K tonnes), Germany (525K tonnes), the U.S. (372K tonnes), China (279K tonnes), Turkey (270K tonnes), Poland (234K tonnes), Italy (217K tonnes), the UK (168K tonnes), Canada (135K tonnes), South Africa (122K tonnes), and Saudi Arabia (112K tonnes) represented the key exporters of soap in the world, committing 66% of total export.

From 2007 to 2016, the most notable growth rate of soap exports, among the main exporting countries, was attained by South Africa (+18.5% per year), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest soap markets worldwide were Germany ($1.1B), the U.S. ($923M) and Indonesia ($555M), together comprising 26% of global exports. These countries were followed by the UK, Malaysia, China, Italy, Poland, Turkey, Canada, Saudi Arabia and South Africa, which together accounted for a further 33%.

South Africa (+18.1% per year) experienced the highest growth rate of soap exports, in terms of the main exporting countries, over the last 9 year period, while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Soap Export Prices By Country

The average soap export price stood at $1,747 per tonne in 2016, shrinking by -3.1% against the previous year. In general, soap export price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2008, when export price increased by 18% y-o-y. Global soap export peaked of $2,037 per tonne in 2011; however, from 2012 to 2016, it failed to regain its strength.

Export prices varied noticeably by country of destination. the country with the highest export prices was the UK ($2,950 per tonne), while Indonesia ($810 per tonne) was among the lowest.

From 2007 to 2016, the most notable growth rate of soap export prices was attained by the UK (+3.5% per year), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
