Which Country Exports the Most Soap in the World?

IndexBox has just published a new report "World: Soap - Market Report. Analysis and Forecast to 2025". Here is a summary of the report's key findings.

In 2016, the amount of soap imported worldwide totaled 8.5M tonnes, ascending by 2% against the previous year figure. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% over the period from 2007 to 2016- the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013, when it surged by 6% y-o-y. Over the period under review, global soap imports reached its maximum volume in 2016, and are likely to see steady growth in the near future.

In value terms, soap imports stood at $9.3B in 2016. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +4.8% over the period from 2007 to 2016- the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. Global soap import peaked of $10B in 2014- however, from 2015 to 2016, it stood at a somewhat lower level.

Soap Imports By Country

The countries with the highest levels of soap imports in 2016 were Indonesia (685K tonnes), Malaysia (582K tonnes), Germany (530K tonnes), the U.S. (460K tonnes), Turkey (358K tonnes), China (321K tonnes), the UK (264K tonnes), Italy (241K tonnes), Poland (234K tonnes), Saudi Arabia (227K tonnes), France (221K tonnes), and South Africa (208K tonnes), together amounting to 51% of total import.

From 2007 to 2016, the most notable growth rate of soap imports, among the main importing countries, was attained by the U.S. (+5.0% per year), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest soap markets worldwide were the U.S. ($845M), Germany ($476M) and the UK ($472M), with a combined 19% share of global imports.France, Saudi Arabia, China, Italy, Poland, Malaysia, Turkey, South Africa and Indonesia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 15%.

Indonesia (+18.4% per year) recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the soap imports, among the main importing countries, over the last 9 year period, while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Soap Import Prices By Country

The average soap import price stood at $1,094 per tonne in 2016, dropping by -2.1% against the previous year. Over the period from 2007 to 2016 it increased at an average annual rate of +2.5%.The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2008, when import price increased by 18% y-o-y. Over the period under review, average soap import price attained its maximum level of $1,200 per tonne in 2014- however, from 2015 to 2016, it failed to regain its strength.

There were significant differences in the average import prices amongst major importing countries. In 2016, the country with the highest import prices was France ($1,864 per tonne), while Indonesia ($63 per tonne) was among the lowest.

From 2007 to 2016, the most notable growth rate of soap import prices was attained by Indonesia (+17.3% per year), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
