Root and Tuber Price in Sri Lanka (CIF) - 2022

The average root and tuber import price stood at $252 per ton in 2022, waning by -12.1% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.5%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 an increase of 39%. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the peak figure at $312 per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($1,036 per ton), while the price for Bangladesh ($225 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Pakistan (+3.4%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

Root and Tuber Price in Sri Lanka (FOB) - 2022

The average root and tuber export price stood at $664 per ton in 2022, with an increase of 15% against the previous year. Overall, the export price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the average export price increased by 36%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $819 per ton. From 2014 to 2022, the average export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Canada ($1,946 per ton), while the average price for exports to the United Arab Emirates ($563 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Canada (+3.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Root and Tuber Imports in Sri Lanka

In 2022, approx. 155K tons of roots and tubers were imported into Sri Lanka; growing by 53% on the year before. Overall, total imports indicated a temperate expansion from 2019 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.5% over the last three years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, root and tuber imports soared to $39M in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +3.0% over the period from 2019 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period.

Root and Tuber Exports in Sri Lanka

In 2022, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in shipments abroad of roots and tubers, when their volume increased by 25% to 6.7K tons. Overall, exports, however, showed a noticeable shrinkage.

In value terms, root and tuber exports surged to $4.4M in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +2.0% from 2019 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
