Raw Silk Price in India (CIF) - 2023

The average raw silk import price stood at $55,670 per ton in July 2023, therefore, remained relatively stable against the previous month. Over the period under review, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in March 2023 when the average import price increased by 15% m-o-m. The import price peaked at $59,021 per ton in April 2023; however, from May 2023 to July 2023, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplying countries. In July 2023, the country with the highest price was Vietnam ($62,122 per ton), while the price for China totaled $48,494 per ton.

From July 2022 to July 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Vietnam (+0.1%).

Raw Silk Price in India (FOB) - 2022

The average raw silk export price stood at $13,829 per ton in 2022, falling by -27.8% against the previous year. Overall, the export price continues to indicate a abrupt descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the average export price increased by 143%. The export price peaked at $70,631 per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Iran ($42,566 per ton), while the average price for exports to Bhutan ($9,465 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Vietnam (-6.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Raw Silk Imports in India

In 2022, imports of raw silk into India skyrocketed to 3.9K tons, jumping by 90% on the previous year. Overall, imports posted a buoyant expansion. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, raw silk imports soared to $217M in 2022. In general, imports continue to indicate strong growth. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Raw Silk Exports in India

In 2022, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas shipments of raw silk, when their volume decreased by -87% to 11 tons. In general, exports, however, enjoyed significant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 1,035%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of 81 tons, and then declined rapidly in the following year.

In value terms, raw silk exports contracted dramatically to $146K in 2022. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a buoyant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 903%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $1.5M, and then shrank significantly in the following year.
