Watermelon Production in the United States - 2022

After four years of decline, production of watermelons increased by 0.3% to 1.6M tons in 2022. Over the period under review, production, however, showed a pronounced decrease. Watermelon production peaked at 1.8M tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum. Watermelon output in the United States indicated a noticeable curtailment, which was largely conditioned by a pronounced descent of the harvested area and a relatively flat trend pattern in yield figures.

In value terms, watermelon production contracted slightly to $902M in 2022. Overall, production, however, saw a pronounced contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 9.4%. Over the period under review, production reached the peak level at $1B in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.

Watermelon Harvested Area in the United States - 2022

In 2022, the watermelon harvested area in the United States was estimated at 38K ha, therefore, remained relatively stable against 2021. Overall, the harvested area, however, recorded a perceptible shrinkage. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 3.2% against the previous year. As a result, the harvested area reached the peak level of 45K ha. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of the watermelon harvested area remained at a lower figure.

Watermelon Yield in the United States - 2022

The average yield of watermelons in the United States declined modestly to 41 tons per ha in 2022, remaining relatively unchanged against the year before. In general, the yield saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 3.8%. Over the period under review, the average watermelon yield attained the peak level at 42 tons per ha in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the yield remained at a lower figure.
