Price for Zinc; Waste and Scrap in Thailand (FOB) - 2023

In September 2023, the average zinc; waste and scrap export price amounted to $1,873 per ton, with a decrease of -3.1% against the previous month. In general, the export price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in December 2022 when the average export price increased by 50% m-o-m. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the maximum at $2,289 per ton in January 2023; however, from February 2023 to September 2023, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Average prices varied somewhat for the major overseas markets. In September 2023, the highest price was recorded for prices to Sri Lanka ($2,201 per ton) and Taiwan (Chinese) ($2,002 per ton), while the average price for exports to Belgium ($1,603 per ton) and India ($1,898 per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From September 2022 to September 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Sri Lanka (+3.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the average zinc; waste and scrap import price amounted to $1,215 per ton, dropping by -40.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, showed a buoyant increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 an increase of 659%. The import price peaked at $2,028 per ton in 2020, and then dropped rapidly in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($2,202 per ton), while the price for Japan ($267 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Belgium (+36.8%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

Exports of Zinc; Waste and Scrap in Thailand

In 2022, the amount of zinc; waste and scraps exported from Thailand skyrocketed to 10K tons, jumping by 17% against 2021. In general, total exports indicated a significant increase from 2019 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +20.6% over the last three-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports decreased by -11.9% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 99%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of 12K tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, zinc; waste and scrap exports skyrocketed to $20M in 2022. Overall, exports continue to indicate significant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 72% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in years to come.

In 2022, purchases abroad of zinc; waste and scraps decreased by -44.1% to 2K tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. Over the period under review, imports, however, enjoyed a significant expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 272%. As a result, imports reached the peak of 3.6K tons, and then reduced rapidly in the following year.

In value terms, zinc; waste and scrap imports shrank rapidly to $33K in 2022. Overall, imports saw a significant decline. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 178% against the previous year.
