The average export price for wool; (not carded or combed), greasy (including fleece-washed wool), shorn stood at $5,193 per ton in December 2023, increasing by 22% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the export price, however, saw a slight curtailment. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in October 2023 an increase of 58% against the previous month. The export price peaked at $6,008 per ton in January 2023; however, from February 2023 to December 2023, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In December 2023, the country with the highest price was Italy ($11,109 per ton), while the average price for exports to India ($2,202 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From January 2023 to December 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the Czech Republic (+14.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

In general, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the average import price increased by 81%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $8,113 per ton. From 2019 to 2022, the average import prices failed to regain momentum.
As there is only one major supplying country, the average price level is determined by prices for Australia.
