The average export price for tobacco; other than "homogenised" or "reconstituted" or "smoking"s stood at $22,997 per ton in January 2024, growing by 351% against the previous month. Overall, the export price saw a strong increase. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $23,588 per ton in March 2023; however, from April 2023 to January 2024, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In January 2024, the country with the highest price was Tanzania ($59,010 per ton), while the average price for exports to Mozambique ($5,392 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From January 2023 to January 2024, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Zambia (+8.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
