The average export price for steel, stainless stood at $8,362 per ton in December 2023, growing by 26% against the previous month. Over the period from December 2022 to December 2023, it increased at an average monthly rate of +1.2%. The export price peaked at $9,459 per ton in September 2023; however, from October 2023 to December 2023, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In December 2023, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($29,536 per ton), while the average price for exports to Switzerland ($1,429 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From December 2022 to December 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the Netherlands (+7.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the average import price for steel, stainless amounted to $2,877 per ton, therefore, remained relatively stable against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, recorded a perceptible descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when the average import price increased by 32% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $3,715 per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Spain ($5,522 per ton), while the price for Germany ($1,548 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by China (+3.5%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
Exports of Steel, Stainless; Angles, Shapes and Sections in Italy
In 2022, shipments abroad of steel, stainless decreased by -35.5% to 5.9K tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. Overall, exports saw a deep reduction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when exports increased by 18% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of 9.1K tons, and then contracted rapidly in the following year.
In value terms, exports of steel, stainless contracted to $41M in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +3.1% from 2019 to 2022; however, the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 28% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $47M, and then reduced in the following year.
