Which Country Imports the Most Stainless Steel in the World?

In 2016, the amount of iron angle imported worldwide totaled 35M tonnes, remaining stable against the previous year level. In general, iron angle imports continue to indicate a mild drop. Iron Angle Imports By Country

The imports of the twelve major importers of iron angle, namely China, Spain, Turkey, Luxembourg, Germany, Ukraine, South Korea, Italy, Japan, the U.S., Poland, and France, represented more than half of total import.

From 2007 to 2016, the most notable growth rate of iron angle imports, among the main importing countries, was attained by Luxembourg (+1.5% per year), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Germany ($730M), the U.S. ($691M) and France ($544M) appeared as the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2016, with a combined 17% share of global imports.

The U.S. (;1.4% per year) had the highest rates of growth with regard to the iron angle imports, in terms of the main importing countries, over the last 9 years, while the other global leaders experienced a decline in the imports figures.

The average iron angle import price stood at $324 per tonne in 2016, going down by ;13.1% against the previous year. In general, iron angle import price continues to indicate a deep reduction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2011, when import increased by 22% y;o;y. Over the period under review, average iron angle import price attained its maximum level of $598 per tonne in 2008; however, from 2009 to 2016, it stood at a somewhat lower level.

There were significant differences in the average import prices amongst major importing countries. In 2016, the country with the highest import prices was the U.S. ($715 per tonne), while Luxembourg ($12 per tonne) was among the lowest.

From 2007 to 2016, the most notable growth rate of iron angle import prices was attained by the U.S. (;1.2% per year), while the other global leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.

The imports of the three major importers of stainless steel angle, namely India, Italy, and Germany, represented more than third of total import. Spain (147K tonnes) ranks second globally in stainless steel angle imports with a 6% share, following the U.S. (5%). France (98K tonnes), China (78K tonnes), Japan (68K tonnes), South Korea (56K tonnes), Ukraine (55K tonnes), the UK (50K tonnes), and Turkey (44K tonnes) followed a long way behind this figure.

From 2007 to 2016, the most notable growth rate of stainless steel angle imports, among the main importing countries, was attained by South Korea (+2.8% per year), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Germany ($636M), the U.S. ($478M) and Italy ($246M) appeared as the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2016, together accounting for 30% of global imports.China, the UK, France, South Korea, Turkey, Spain, India, Japan and Ukraine lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 23%.

In 2016, the average import price for stainless steel angle amounted to $1,889 per tonne, declining by -12.7% against the previous year. In general, stainless steel angle import price continues to indicate a significant shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2010, when import price increased by 39% against the previous year level. Over the period under review, average stainless steel angle import price attained its maximum level of $2,977 per tonne in 2011- however, from 2012 to 2016, it stood at a somewhat lower level.

There were significant differences in the average import prices amongst major importing countries. In 2016, the country with the highest import prices was the U.S. ($3,831 per tonne), while India ($218 per tonne) was among the lowest.
