Price for Sheep and Goat Meat in the UK (FOB) - 2022

The average sheep and goat meat export price stood at $8,076 per ton in 2022, declining by -6.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, export price indicated pronounced growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, sheep and goat meat export price increased by +50.6% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the average export price increased by 34% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $8,598 per ton, and then fell in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Belgium ($9,918 per ton), while the average price for exports to Hong Kong SAR ($5,696 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Hong Kong SAR (+10.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Price for Sheep and Goat Meat in the UK (CIF) - 2022

The average sheep and goat meat import price stood at $7,703 per ton in 2022, almost unchanged from the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.3%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when the average import price increased by 19%. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in years to come.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the highest price was recorded for prices from New Zealand ($8,430 per ton) and Australia ($8,207 per ton), while the price for Ireland ($5,697 per ton) and Spain ($6,889 per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Spain (+4.3%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

Exports of Sheep and Goat Meat in the UK

In 2022, overseas shipments of sheep and goat meat increased by 7.4% to 75K tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a deep reduction.

In value terms, sheep and goat meat exports stood at $609M in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +6.1% from 2019 to 2022; however, the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being observed in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 11% against the previous year. The exports peaked in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, sheep and goat meat imports soared to $429M in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +2.4% over the period from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed in certain years. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
