Price for Polystyrene in Primary Forms in China (CIF) - 2023
In June 2023, the average polystyrene in primary forms import price amounted to $1,079 per ton, which is down by -3.2% against the previous month. In general, the import price continues to indicate a slight descent. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in April 2023 when the average import price increased by 2% month-to-month. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $1,357 per ton in June 2022; however, from July 2022 to June 2023, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was South Korea ($1,208 per ton), while the price for the Philippines ($723 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From June 2022 to June 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Japan (-1.1%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.

In 2022, the average polystyrene in primary forms export price amounted to $2,002 per ton, reducing by -12% against the previous year. In general, the export price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 35%. The export price peaked at $2,317 per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($2,750 per ton), while the average price for exports to Brazil ($1,520 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to South Africa (+9.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Imports of Polystyrene in Primary Forms in China
In 2022, overseas purchases of polystyrene in primary forms (excluding expansible polystyrene) decreased by -23.7% to 890K tons, falling for the second consecutive year after two years of growth. In general, imports showed a deep reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 6.3%. As a result, imports attained the peak of 1.3M tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, polystyrene in primary forms imports dropped dramatically to $1.1B in 2022. Over the period under review, imports showed a abrupt shrinkage. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 12%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $1.6B, and then reduced rapidly in the following year.

For the fourth year in a row, China recorded growth in overseas shipments of polystyrene in primary forms (excluding expansible polystyrene), which increased by 71% to 119K tons in 2022. Over the period under review, exports posted significant growth. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, polystyrene in primary forms exports skyrocketed to $239M in 2022. Overall, exports saw a significant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 74% against the previous year.
