The average import price for peat; (including peat litter), whether or not agglomerateds stood at $423 per ton in 2022, picking up by 64% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, showed a precipitous setback. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $14,329 per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Latvia ($527 per ton), while the price for Brazil ($233 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Estonia (+33.3%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, overseas purchases of peat; (including peat litter), whether or not agglomerateds decreased by -24.4% to 448 tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. Overall, imports, however, enjoyed prominent growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when imports increased by 82%. As a result, imports reached the peak of 592 tons, and then declined rapidly in the following year.

In value terms, imports of peat; (including peat litter), whether or not agglomerateds soared to $189K in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, enjoyed significant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 128% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports of reached the peak figure in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.
