In December 2023, the average export price for peat; (including peat litter), whether or not agglomerateds amounted to $407 per ton, growing by 1.9% against the previous month. Overall, the export price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in March 2023 an increase of 6.2% m-o-m. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $469 per ton. From April 2023 to December 2023, the the average export prices failed to regain momentum.

As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for the United States.

From December 2022 to December 2023, the rate of growth in terms of prices for the United States amounted to +0.1% per month.

The average import price for peat; (including peat litter), whether or not agglomerateds stood at $169 per ton in 2022, picking up by 56% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the maximum at $178 per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Sri Lanka ($1,006 per ton), while the price for Ireland ($141 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Latvia (+9.4%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 19%.

In value terms, exports of peat; (including peat litter), whether or not agglomerateds shrank to $526M in 2022. In general, total exports indicated a buoyant expansion from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +11.8% over the last three years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +39.9% against 2019 indices. Over the period under review, imports showed a deep reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 26%. As a result, imports reached the peak of 199K tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports of remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, imports of peat; (including peat litter), whether or not agglomerateds rose significantly to $21M in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +7.9% over the period from 2019 to 2022; however, the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 20%. Imports peaked in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.
