In 2022, the average import price for paper and paperboard, excluding newsprint amounted to $1,427 per ton, with an increase of 23% against the previous year. Overall, the import price saw prominent growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the average import price increased by 36% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in years to come.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Ukraine ($2,215 per ton), while the price for Russia ($1,126 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Turkey (+11.8%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the average export price for paper and paperboard, excluding newsprint amounted to $678 per ton, rising by 62% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, recorded a noticeable reduction. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the peak figure at $1,055 per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Turkey ($1,129 per ton), while the average price for exports to Iran ($80 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Turkey (-0.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Imports of Paper and Paperboard, Excluding Newsprint in Azerbaijan

In 2022, purchases abroad of paper and paperboard, excluding newsprint was finally on the rise to reach 73K tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. In general, imports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, paper and paperboard, excluding newsprint imports soared to $104M in 2022. Over the period under review, total imports indicated strong growth from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +12.8% over the last three-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +66.8% against 2020 indices. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Over the period under review, exports showed a abrupt contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 260% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of 6.2K tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, paper and paperboard, excluding newsprint exports declined remarkably to $818K in 2022. Overall, exports, however, posted a prominent expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 213%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $2M. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
