The average export price for onions, shallots, garlic, leeks and other alliaceous vegetables; fresh or chilleds stood at $601 per ton in October 2023, which is down by -24.2% against the previous month. Overall, export price indicated a mild expansion from October 2022 to October 2023: its price increased at an average monthly rate of +1.1% over the last twelve-month period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on October 2023 figures, export price for onions, shallots, garlic, leeks and other alliaceous vegetables; fresh or chilleds decreased by -50.9% against June 2023 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in December 2022 when the average export price increased by 25% m-o-m. The export price peaked at $1,225 per ton in June 2023; however, from July 2023 to October 2023, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In October 2023, the country with the highest price was the UK ($812 per ton), while the average price for exports to Cote d'Ivoire ($431 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From October 2022 to October 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the Dominican Republic (+5.1%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In October 2023, the average import price for onions, shallots, garlic, leeks and other alliaceous vegetables; fresh or chilleds amounted to $1,416 per ton, picking up by 14% against the previous month. Overall, import price indicated modest growth from October 2022 to October 2023: its price increased at an average monthly rate of +1.0% over the last twelve months. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on October 2023 figures, import price for onions, shallots, garlic, leeks and other alliaceous vegetables; fresh or chilleds increased by +50.3% against June 2023 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in January 2023 when the average import price increased by 62% against the previous month. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the maximum in October 2023.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In October 2023, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($2,136 per ton), while the price for Peru ($888 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From October 2022 to October 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Egypt (+6.7%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, overseas shipments of onions, shallots, garlic, leeks and other alliaceous vegetables; fresh or chilleds decreased by -0.3% to 1.8M tons, falling for the second consecutive year after two years of growth. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.1% from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when exports increased by 11% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of 1.9M tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports of failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, exports of onions, shallots, garlic, leeks and other alliaceous vegetables; fresh or chilleds stood at $997M in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +1.1% from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 4.6% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $1B. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports of remained at a lower figure.
