Price for Nutmeg, Mace and Cardamom in Sri Lanka (FOB) - 2022

The average nutmeg, mace and cardamom export price stood at $8,910 per ton in 2022, shrinking by -7.7% against the previous year. Overall, the export price continues to indicate a pronounced reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 22%. The export price peaked at $12,193 per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Singapore ($27,236 per ton), while the average price for exports to Pakistan ($3,698 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the Dominican Republic (+10.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average nutmeg, mace and cardamom import price stood at $10,657 per ton in 2022, which is down by -16.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when the average import price increased by 42%. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $13,541 per ton in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Pakistan ($14,000 per ton), while the price for China ($600 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United States (+23.7%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

Exports of Nutmeg, Mace and Cardamom in Sri Lanka

In 2022, shipments abroad of nutmeg, mace and cardamoms was finally on the rise to reach 2.2K tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. In general, exports, however, showed a abrupt curtailment.

In value terms, nutmeg, mace and cardamom exports rose to $20M in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a noticeable reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 9.8% against the previous year.

Imports of Nutmeg, Mace and Cardamom in Sri Lanka

In 2022, purchases abroad of nutmeg, mace and cardamoms decreased by -99.3% to 140 kg, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. In general, imports showed a dramatic decline. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 27% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of 82 tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, nutmeg, mace and cardamom imports declined sharply to $1.5K in 2022. Overall, imports saw a dramatic downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 31%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $1.1M. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
