Price for Natural Rubber and Gum in Japan (CIF) - 2023
In July 2023, the average natural rubber and gum import price amounted to $1,436 per ton, with an increase of 1.7% against the previous month. In general, the import price, however, recorded a pronounced slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in March 2023 an increase of 9.1% against the previous month. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $1,930 per ton in July 2022; however, from August 2022 to July 2023, import prices failed to regain momentum.
As there is only one major supplying country, the average price level is determined by prices for Thailand.
From July 2022 to July 2023, the rate of growth in terms of prices for Malaysia amounted to -2.3% per month.
Price for Natural Rubber and Gum in Japan (FOB) - 2022
In 2022, the average natural rubber and gum export price amounted to $3,573 per ton, waning by -15.9% against the previous year. In general, export price indicated moderate growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, natural rubber and gum export price decreased by -7.5% against 2017 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the average export price increased by 59%. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the peak figure at $6,376 per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Thailand ($5,175 per ton), while the average price for exports to China ($2,134 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Sri Lanka (+36.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Imports of Natural Rubber and Gum in Japan
In 2022, approx. 6.4K tons of natural rubber and gums were imported into Japan; increasing by 5.8% against 2021 figures. Overall, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when imports increased by 7.6%.
In value terms, natural rubber and gum imports rose modestly to $11M in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +7.2% over the period from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 31%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.
