Price for Laptop and Tablet Computer in Japan (CIF) - 2023

The average laptop and tablet computer import price stood at $554 per unit in July 2023, picking up by 3.8% against the previous month. In general, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in February 2023 an increase of 10% month-to-month. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the maximum at $584 per unit in July 2022; however, from August 2022 to July 2023, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

As there is only one major supplying country, the average price level is determined by prices for China.

From July 2022 to July 2023, the rate of growth in terms of prices for China amounted to -0.5% per month.

Price for Laptop and Tablet Computer in Japan (FOB) - 2022

In 2022, the average laptop and tablet computer export price amounted to $635 per unit, remaining stable against the previous year. Overall, export price indicated a measured increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, laptop and tablet computer export price increased by +56.6% against 2014 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 21%. The export price peaked in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in years to come.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was China ($692 per unit), while the average price for exports to the United Arab Emirates ($64 per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to China (+4.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports of Laptop and Tablet Computer in Japan

In 2022, supplies from abroad of laptops and palm-top computers decreased by -13.2% to 16M units, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. Overall, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 40%. As a result, imports attained the peak of 23M units. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, laptop and tablet computer imports contracted to $9B in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +2.9% from 2019 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when imports increased by 38% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $11.4B. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In 2022, laptop and tablet computer exports from Japan shrank dramatically to 599K units, with a decrease of -33.8% compared with 2021. In general, exports recorded a abrupt decrease. The smallest decline of -4.1% was in 2020. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at 991K units in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, laptop and tablet computer exports fell significantly to $381M in 2022. Over the period under review, exports recorded a drastic downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 3.6%. The exports peaked at $572M in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
