In July 2023, the average export price for hot-rolled steel bars and rods amounted to $1,027 per ton, with a decrease of -6.6% against the previous month. Overall, the export price saw a noticeable curtailment. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in September 2022 an increase of 11% m-o-m. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the peak figure at $1,310 per ton in July 2022; however, from August 2022 to July 2023, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In July 2023, the country with the highest price was the UK ($1,766 per ton), while the average price for exports to Estonia ($663 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From July 2022 to July 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the UK (+1.1%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

The average import price for hot-rolled steel bars and rods stood at $1,103 per ton in 2022, growing by 21% against the previous year. In general, import price indicated a pronounced expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, hot-rolled steel bar and rod import price increased by +78.7% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 68%. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($1,754 per ton), while the price for Malaysia ($856 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Tunisia (+4.9%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

Exports of Hot-Rolled Steel Bar and Rod in Spain

In 2022, approx. 1.9M tons of hot-rolled steel bars and rods were exported from Spain; falling by -21.9% against the year before. Over the period under review, exports recorded a abrupt downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 13%.

In value terms, hot-rolled steel bar and rod exports reached $2.5B in 2022. In general, total exports indicated a prominent expansion from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +12.4% over the last three years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +82.6% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 67%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
