Price for Hot-Rolled Steel Bar and Rod in the United States (CIF) - 2023
In August 2023, the average import price for hot-rolled steel bars and rods amounted to $932 per ton, dropping by -6.3% against the previous month. In general, the import price recorded a noticeable decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in May 2023 when the average import price increased by 12% month-to-month. The import price peaked at $1,277 per ton in August 2022; however, from September 2022 to August 2023, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was Spain ($1,775 per ton), while the price for Egypt ($560 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From August 2022 to August 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Turkey (+4.2%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
Price for Hot-Rolled Steel Bar and Rod in the United States (FOB) - 2023
In August 2023, the average export price for hot-rolled steel bars and rods amounted to $1,861 per ton, almost unchanged from the previous month. Overall, the export price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in May 2023 an increase of 8.7% month-to-month. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the maximum at $2,125 per ton in September 2022; however, from October 2022 to August 2023, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by the country of destination: the country with the highest price was Mexico ($2,320 per ton), while the average price for exports to the Dominican Republic ($845 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From August 2022 to August 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Mexico (-0.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.
Imports of Hot-Rolled Steel Bar and Rod in the United States
In 2022, the amount of hot-rolled steel bars and rods imported into the United States soared to 3.6M tons, growing by 16% against the previous year's figure. In general, total imports indicated a buoyant increase from 2019 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +9.9% over the last three-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +59.7% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 38%. Imports peaked in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, hot-rolled steel bar and rod imports surged to $4.1B in 2022. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a significant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when imports increased by 82%. Imports peaked in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in the near future.
