Price for Hot-Rolled Steel Bar and Rod in China (FOB) - 2022
In 2022, the average export price for hot-rolled steel bars and rods amounted to $959 per ton, increasing by 14% against the previous year. In general, the export price posted perceptible growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when the average export price increased by 135% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in years to come.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the Philippines ($1,247 per ton), while the average price for exports to Mongolia ($680 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the Philippines (+7.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Price for Hot-Rolled Steel Bar and Rod in China (CIF) - 2023
In June 2023, the average import price for hot-rolled steel bars and rods amounted to $1,882 per ton, with an increase of 5.7% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the import price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in October 2022 an increase of 16% against the previous month. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $2,209 per ton. From November 2022 to June 2023, the average import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In June 2023, the country with the highest price was Sweden ($5,593 per ton), while the price for Qatar ($628 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From June 2022 to June 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Sweden (+3.8%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
Exports of Hot-Rolled Steel Bar and Rod in China
In 2022, approx. 7.1M tons of hot-rolled steel bars and rods were exported from China; with a decrease of -2.3% against the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, exports saw a abrupt descent. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 12%.
In value terms, hot-rolled steel bar and rod exports expanded notably to $6.8B in 2022. In general, total exports indicated a buoyant increase from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +8.4% over the last three years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +84.6% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 65%. The exports peaked in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.
