Price for Hot-Rolled Non-Alloy Steel Wire Rod in Malaysia (FOB) - 2021
In December 2021, the average export price for hot-rolled non-alloy steel wire rods amounted to $621 per ton, with a decrease of -4.9% against the previous month. Over the period from December 2020 to December 2021, it increased at an average monthly rate of +2.7%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in March 2021 an increase of 10% month-to-month. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $652 per ton in November 2021, and then dropped modestly in the following month.
Average prices varied noticeably for the major export markets. In December 2021, the highest price was recorded for prices to South Korea ($685 per ton) and the Philippines ($644 per ton), while the average price for exports to China ($603 per ton) and Thailand ($620 per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From December 2020 to December 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Kenya (+4.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Price for Hot-Rolled Non-Alloy Steel Wire Rod in Malaysia (CIF) - 2021
In December 2021, the average import price for hot-rolled non-alloy steel wire rods amounted to $891 per ton, with an increase of 6.5% against the previous month. Overall, import price indicated moderate growth from December 2020 to December 2021: its price increased at an average monthly rate of +4.1% over the last twelve-month period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on December 2021 figures, hot-rolled non-alloy steel wire rod import price increased by +6.5% against November 2021 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in September 2021 when the average import price increased by 9.8% month-to-month. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the maximum in December 2021.
Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was China ($2,038 per ton), while the price for Singapore ($770 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From December 2020 to December 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by China (+10.8%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
Exports of Hot-Rolled Non-Alloy Steel Wire Rod in Malaysia
In 2022, approx. 2.3M tons of hot-rolled non-alloy steel wire rods were exported from Malaysia; surging by 13% on the previous year. Overall, total exports indicated a remarkable increase from 2019 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +15.7% over the last three years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports decreased by -12.6% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 77%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of 2.6M tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, hot-rolled non-alloy steel wire rod exports stood at $1.2B in 2022. Over the period under review, total exports indicated a buoyant expansion from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +17.2% over the last three-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports decreased by -0.1% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 61% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $1.2B; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.

The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +9.7% over the period from 2019 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 24%. As a result, imports attained the peak of 389K tons, and then reduced in the following year.
In value terms, hot-rolled non-alloy steel wire rod imports declined rapidly to $229M in 2022. In general, total imports indicated resilient growth from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +10.4% over the last three years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +34.5% against 2019 indices.
