Price for Grated and Blue Cheese in South Africa (FOB) - 2023
In July 2023, the average grated and blue cheese export price amounted to $4,368 per ton, flattening at the previous month. In general, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in November 2022 when the average export price increased by 7.1% m-o-m. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the maximum at $4,412 per ton in January 2023; afterwards, it flattened through to July 2023.
Prices varied noticeably by the country of destination: the country with the highest price was Mozambique ($4,953 per ton), while the average price for exports to Lesotho ($2,741 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From July 2022 to July 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Mozambique (+5.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In July 2023, the average grated and blue cheese import price amounted to $5,313 per ton, which is down by -9.1% against the previous month. Overall, the import price continues to indicate a perceptible decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in December 2022 an increase of 35% m-o-m. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $11,318 per ton. From January 2023 to July 2023, the average import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In July 2023, the country with the highest price was France ($14,261 per ton), while the price for the UK ($4,875 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From July 2022 to July 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by France (+8.7%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
Exports of Grated and Blue Cheese in South Africa
In 2022, approx. 9.3K tons of grated, powdered and blue-veined cheese were exported from South Africa; growing by 16% compared with 2021. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +10.6% over the period from 2019 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years.
