The average export price for ginger, saffron, tumeric (curcuma), thyme, bay leaves, curry and other spiceses stood at $3,219 per ton in January 2024, shrinking by -4.7% against the previous month. Over the period from January 2023 to January 2024, it increased at an average monthly rate of +1.1%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in May 2023 an increase of 20% m-o-m. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $3,663 per ton. From June 2023 to January 2024, the the average export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In January 2024, the country with the highest price was Germany ($4,385 per ton), while the average price for exports to India ($718 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From January 2023 to January 2024, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to China (+3.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In January 2024, the average import price for ginger, saffron, tumeric (curcuma), thyme, bay leaves, curry and other spiceses amounted to $1,501 per ton, shrinking by -4.6% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in March 2023 when the average import price increased by 29% against the previous month. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $2,105 per ton. From April 2023 to January 2024, the average import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In January 2024, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($8,455 per ton), while the price for Iran ($264 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From January 2023 to January 2024, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Egypt (+17.7%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in shipments abroad of ginger, saffron, tumeric (curcuma), thyme, bay leaves, curry and other spiceses, when their volume decreased by -12.2% to 41K tons. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 18% against the previous year.

In value terms, exports of ginger, saffron, tumeric (curcuma), thyme, bay leaves, curry and other spiceses contracted to $127M in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +2.5% over the period from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 16%.
