The average import price for ginger, saffron, tumeric (curcuma), thyme, bay leaves, curry and other spiceses stood at $2,744 per ton in 2022, with an increase of 5.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, showed a slight decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 an increase of 20%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $3,354 per ton. From 2017 to 2022, the average import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Sri Lanka ($6,958 per ton), while the price for the United Arab Emirates ($1,497 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Sri Lanka (+10.6%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the average export price for ginger, saffron, tumeric (curcuma), thyme, bay leaves, curry and other spiceses amounted to $1,540 per ton, dropping by -10.8% against the previous year. In general, the export price continues to indicate a pronounced reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 32%. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the maximum at $2,588 per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was France ($6,684 per ton), while the average price for exports to South Africa ($253 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to France (+18.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

After three years of growth, overseas purchases of ginger, saffron, tumeric (curcuma), thyme, bay leaves, curry and other spiceses decreased by -10.2% to 1K tons in 2022. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +7.7% over the period from 2019 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 27%. As a result, imports reached the peak of 1.1K tons, and then contracted in the following year.

In value terms, imports of ginger, saffron, tumeric (curcuma), thyme, bay leaves, curry and other spiceses contracted to $2.8M in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +10.4% from 2019 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 26%.
