Price for Fish Meal; Fit for Human Consumption in Uganda (FOB) - 2022

The average export price for fish meal; fit for human consumptia stood at $1,393 per ton in 2022, surging by 4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, saw a mild contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when the average export price increased by 140% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $6,394 per ton. From 2018 to 2022, the average export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Rwanda ($2,447 per ton), while the average price for exports to Burundi stood at $567 per ton.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Saudi Arabia (+62.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

The average import price for fish meal; fit for human consumptia stood at $870 per ton in 2022, which is down by -4.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import price indicated a moderate increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, import price for fish meal; fit for human consumptia increased by +57.2% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when the average import price increased by 88%. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the maximum at $1,161 per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Kenya ($1,616 per ton), while the price for South Africa stood at $377 per ton.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Kenya (+13.9%).

After two years of decline, overseas shipments of fish meal; fit for human consumptia increased by 96% to 214 kg in 2022. In general, exports, however, saw a dramatic setback.

In value terms, exports of fish meal; fit for human consumptia surged to $298 in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a dramatic descent.
