The average import price for ferrous waste and scrap; of stainless steels stood at $1,634 per ton in December 2023, shrinking by -5.5% against the previous month. In general, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in January 2023 an increase of 9.9% against the previous month. The import price peaked at $1,891 per ton in May 2023; however, from June 2023 to December 2023, import prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was the United States ($1,493 per ton), while the price for Norway ($339 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From December 2022 to December 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Italy (+10.2%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

In December 2023, the average export price for ferrous waste and scrap; of stainless steels amounted to $1,047 per ton, standing approximately at the previous month. Overall, the export price, however, showed a slight downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in April 2023 an increase of 66% m-o-m. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $1,654 per ton in May 2023; however, from June 2023 to December 2023, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In December 2023, the country with the highest price was Turkey ($1,041 per ton), while the average price for exports to Pakistan ($665 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From December 2022 to December 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the UK (+12.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.
Imports of Ferrous Waste and Scrap; of Stainless Steel in Belgium
In 2022, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in supplies from abroad of ferrous waste and scrap; of stainless steels, when their volume decreased by -21.5% to 887K tons. Overall, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 17%. As a result, imports attained the peak of 1.1M tons, and then shrank dramatically in the following year.
In value terms, imports of ferrous waste and scrap; of stainless steels rose rapidly to $1.8B in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, enjoyed a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 78%. Over the period under review, imports of hit record highs in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in the near future.

In value terms, exports of ferrous waste and scrap; of stainless steels rose rapidly to $136M in 2022. Overall, exports, however, enjoyed a remarkable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 78%. The exports peaked in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.
