Price for Crude Oil and Processed Petroleum in the United States (CIF) - 2022

The average import price for crude oil and processed petroleum stood at $696 per ton in 2022, increasing by 45% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, showed a mild downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 67%. The import price peaked at $780 per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the highest price was recorded for prices from Nigeria ($814 per ton) and Kuwait ($764 per ton), while the price for Canada ($634 per ton) and Mexico ($645 per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Nigeria (-0.5%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.

Price for Crude Oil and Processed Petroleum in the United States (FOB) - 2022

In 2022, the average export price for crude oil and processed petroleum amounted to $769 per ton, rising by 46% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, showed a mild descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the average export price increased by 47%. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the maximum at $880 per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat for the major export markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the countries with the highest prices were Chile ($897 per ton) and Mexico ($886 per ton), while the average price for exports to China ($635 per ton) and Italy ($639 per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Canada (+0.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Imports of Crude Oil and Processed Petroleum in the United States

In 2022, crude oil and processed petroleum imports into the United States declined modestly to 399M tons, with a decrease of -2.1% against 2021. Over the period under review, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 3.4%. As a result, imports reached the peak of 408M tons, and then reduced modestly in the following year.

In value terms, crude oil and processed petroleum imports skyrocketed to $277.6B in 2022. Overall, imports, however, showed a buoyant expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 73%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in the near future.

In value terms, crude oil and processed petroleum exports skyrocketed to $253.2B in 2022. In general, exports posted a strong expansion. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
