Merey Oil

Merey oil is a type of heavy crude oil that is found in the Orinoco Belt in Venezuela. It is named after the Merey River, which runs through the region where the oil deposits are located. Merey oil is known for its high viscosity and density, which makes it difficult to extract and refine.

One of the key characteristics of merey oil is its high sulfur content, which makes it a sour crude oil. This means that it contains a relatively high amount of sulfur compounds, such as hydrogen sulfide. Sour crude oils like merey oil require additional processing to remove the sulfur and other impurities before they can be used as a feedstock for refined petroleum products.

Merey oil is typically blended with lighter crude oils to improve its flow properties and reduce its sulfur content. This blending process, known as dilution, allows the oil to be transported more easily through pipelines and refined more efficiently.

The production of merey oil plays a significant role in Venezuela's economy. The Orinoco Belt, where the oil deposits are located, contains one of the largest oil reserves in the world. Merey oil production is primarily carried out by the state-owned oil company, Petróleos de Venezuela, S.A. (PDVSA).
