Price for Cocoa; Paste, Not Defatted in Malaysia (FOB) - 2021
In December 2021, the average cocoa; paste, not defatted export price amounted to $3,148 per ton, waning by -22.8% against the previous month. Overall, the export price continues to indicate a perceptible slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in August 2021 when the average export price increased by 10% month-to-month. The export price peaked at $4,470 per ton in May 2021; however, from June 2021 to December 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In December 2021, the country with the highest price was Australia ($4,352 per ton), while the average price for exports to Japan ($1,770 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From December 2020 to December 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to China (+1.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Price for Cocoa; Paste, Not Defatted in Malaysia (CIF) - 2021
In December 2021, the average cocoa; paste, not defatted import price amounted to $3,651 per ton, rising by 23% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the import price, however, showed a mild curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in August 2021 an increase of 36% against the previous month. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the maximum at $4,809 per ton in March 2021; however, from April 2021 to December 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($5,446 per ton), while the price for Indonesia ($3,226 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From December 2020 to December 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Netherlands (+18.1%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
Exports of Cocoa; Paste, Not Defatted in Malaysia
In 2022, exports of cocoa; paste, not defatteds from Malaysia fell to 27K tons, with a decrease of -12.5% on the previous year's figure. Overall, exports saw a abrupt slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 33%.
In value terms, cocoa; paste, not defatted exports shrank to $109M in 2022. In general, exports recorded a pronounced downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 29%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $123M, and then reduced in the following year.

In 2022, after two years of decline, there was growth in purchases abroad of cocoa; paste, not defatteds, when their volume increased by 3.6% to 6.2K tons. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a sharp reduction.
In value terms, cocoa; paste, not defatted imports stood at $21M in 2022. Overall, imports, however, recorded a precipitous descent.
