The average export price for coal; anthracite, whether or not pulverised, but not agglomerateds stood at $257 per ton in December 2023, reducing by -8.8% against the previous month. Overall, the export price showed a pronounced reduction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in June 2023 an increase of 29% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the peak figure at $397 per ton in December 2022; however, from January 2023 to December 2023, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In December 2023, the country with the highest price was Mexico ($520 per ton), while the average price for exports to Japan ($236 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From December 2022 to December 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Mexico (+3.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Over the period under review, the import price, however, showed a pronounced slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in March 2023 when the average import price increased by 769% against the previous month. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $1,734 per ton. From April 2023 to December 2023, the average import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was Peru ($179 per ton), while the price for China totaled $83.0 per ton.

From January 2023 to December 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+21.6%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
