In February 2023, the average import price for anise, badian, fennel and coriander amounted to $995 per ton, shrinking by -3.3% against the previous month. Overall, the import price recorded a slight contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in November 2022 when the average import price increased by 37% against the previous month. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the peak figure at $1,220 per ton in February 2022; however, from March 2022 to February 2023, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was China ($2,872 per ton), while the price for Russia ($711 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From February 2022 to February 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Iran (+1.3%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average export price for anise, badian, fennel and coriander stood at $1,519 per ton in 2022, which is down by -10.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price continues to indicate a noticeable descent. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when the average export price increased by 47% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $2,713 per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the UK ($3,247 per ton), while the average price for exports to Oman ($316 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the UK (+1.9%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

In 2022, supplies from abroad of anise, badian, fennel and coriander decreased by -44.3% to 25K tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. Overall, imports, however, showed a noticeable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 46%.

In value terms, anise, badian, fennel and coriander imports contracted to $21M in 2022. In general, total imports indicated a significant increase from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +20.3% over the last three-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +73.9% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 50% against the previous year.
