The average import price for anise, badian, fennel and coriander stood at $1,348 per ton in 2022, declining by -15% against the previous year. Overall, the import price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the average import price increased by 53%. The import price peaked at $2,175 per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($2,926 per ton), while the price for Ethiopia ($255 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Romania (+2.5%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average export price for anise, badian, fennel and coriander stood at $2,260 per ton in 2022, picking up by 14% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, saw a abrupt shrinkage. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 an increase of 34% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $5,320 per ton. From 2015 to 2022, the average export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($11,514 per ton), while the average price for exports to Uganda ($1,792 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Switzerland (+48.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports of Anise, Badian, Fennel and Coriander in Kenya

In 2022, supplies from abroad of anise, badian, fennel and coriander decreased by -28.3% to 785 tons, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. Overall, imports recorded a deep downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 43%. As a result, imports reached the peak of 1.3K tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, anise, badian, fennel and coriander imports shrank significantly to $1.1M in 2022. Over the period under review, imports recorded a deep slump. The smallest decline of -3.6% was in 2020.
