Price for Andalusite, Kyanite and Sillimanite in South Africa (FOB) - 2023
In July 2023, the average andalusite, kyanite and sillimanite export price amounted to $427 per ton, which is down by -5.5% against the previous month. Over the last twelve months, it increased at an average monthly rate of +2.2%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in June 2023 when the average export price increased by 17% m-o-m. The export price peaked at $454 per ton in April 2023; however, from May 2023 to July 2023, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In July 2023, the country with the highest price was India ($612 per ton), while the average price for exports to the United States ($203 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From July 2022 to July 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to India (+7.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the average andalusite, kyanite and sillimanite import price amounted to $362 per ton, surging by 12% against the previous year. In general, import price indicated a modest increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, andalusite, kyanite and sillimanite import price decreased by -29.9% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the average import price increased by 50% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $517 per ton. From 2021 to 2022, the average import prices remained at a lower figure.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the United States ($456 per ton), while the price for China totaled $330 per ton.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by China (+1.7%).
Exports of Andalusite, Kyanite and Sillimanite in South Africa
In 2022, shipments abroad of andalusite, kyanite and sillimanites was finally on the rise to reach 130K tons after two years of decline. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a abrupt curtailment.
In value terms, andalusite, kyanite and sillimanite exports soared to $49M in 2022. Over the period under review, exports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
