Price for Aluminium Waste and Scrap in Japan (FOB) - 2023

The average aluminium waste and scrap export price stood at $1,397 per ton in July 2023, rising by 1.7% against the previous month. In general, the export price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in February 2023 an increase of 7.5% m-o-m. The export price peaked at $1,530 per ton in July 2022; however, from August 2022 to July 2023, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In July 2023, the country with the highest price was Hong Kong SAR ($2,042 per ton), while the average price for exports to Malaysia ($850 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From July 2022 to July 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Malaysia (+0.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

In July 2023, the average aluminium waste and scrap import price amounted to $2,034 per ton, increasing by 6.3% against the previous month. Overall, the import price, however, recorded a slight reduction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in December 2022 when the average import price increased by 7.8% month-to-month. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the maximum at $2,285 per ton in July 2022; however, from August 2022 to July 2023, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was Spain ($2,545 per ton), while the price for South Korea ($1,371 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From July 2022 to July 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Spain (+1.3%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.

Exports of Aluminium Waste and Scrap in Japan

In 2022, approx. 438K tons of aluminium waste and scraps were exported from Japan; growing by 12% compared with the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, total exports indicated a buoyant expansion from 2019 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +16.2% over the last three-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +57.0% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 26%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, aluminium waste and scrap exports skyrocketed to $675M in 2022. Overall, exports saw a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 82% against the previous year. The exports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
