Metals; Palladium, Semi-Manufactured Price in Japan (FOB) - 2023
In July 2023, the average metals; palladium, semi-manufactured export price amounted to $6.6M per ton, shrinking by -21.1% against the previous month. In general, the export price recorded a perceptible descent. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in October 2022 an increase of 66% against the previous month. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $22,004 per kg; afterwards, it flattened through to July 2023.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In July 2023, the country with the highest price was South Korea ($37.9M per ton), while the average price for exports to Hong Kong SAR ($1.4M per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From July 2022 to July 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to South Korea (+3.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average metals; palladium, semi-manufactured import price stood at $27,676,646 per ton in 2022, waning by -25.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, recorded perceptible growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 an increase of 92% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $37,090 per kg, and then reduced markedly in the following year.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Switzerland ($56,789,831 per ton), while the price for Taiwan (Chinese) ($7,078,900 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Taiwan (Chinese) (+11.4%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
Metals; Palladium, Semi-Manufactured Exports in Japan
In 2022, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in shipments abroad of metals; palladium, semi-manufactureds, when their volume decreased by -13.2% to 7.1 tons. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.2% over the period from 2019 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 27%.
In value terms, metals; palladium, semi-manufactured exports expanded remarkably to $107M in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 18% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $124M. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

After two years of decline, overseas purchases of metals; palladium, semi-manufactureds increased by 16% to 319 kg in 2022. Overall, imports, however, saw a precipitous setback.
In value terms, metals; palladium, semi-manufactured imports shrank to $8.8M in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a deep setback. The smallest decline of -11.5% was in 2020.
